The much awaited Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), also named Atal Setu in honor of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee is poised for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 12.
WHAT IS THE MUMBAI TRANS HARBOUR LINK PROJECT?
This 18,000-crore project spans 6 lanes, covering 16.50 kilometers over the sea and 5.5 kilometers on land, promising a significant reduction in travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just 20 minutes a remarkable improvement from the usual 2 hours.
Recently, Mumbai police shared specific details, including speed limits, vehicle entry, and restrictions on the sea-bridge, along with steps to avoid disturbances and accidents. Emphasizing safety, the Mumbai police justified these measures, aiming to prevent any danger, obstructions and inconvenience to the public.
WHAT IS THE SPEED LIMIT ON MUMBAI TRANS HARBOUR LINK ROAD?
According to an official statement, specific speed limits apply to different vehicle categories. Cars, taxis, light motor vehicles, mini busses, and two-axle buses are allowed a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour. However, speed restrictions of 40 kmph will be enforced during the ascent and descent of the bridge for safety measures.

ENTRY RESTRICTIONS AND ROUTE CHANGES
To streamline traffic flow, multi-axle heavy vehicles, trucks, and buses heading towards Mumbai are prohibited on the Eastern Freeway. Instead, these vehicles must utilize the Mumbai Port-Sewri Exit (Exit 1C) and navigate the MBPT Road near ‘Gadi Adda’ for further movement. In the interest of safety, specific vehicle types such as motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, autos, tractors, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles are explicitly barred from entering the MTHL.
WHAT ARE TOLL CHARGES FOR MUMBAI TRANS HARBOUR LINK?
Car commuters will incur a toll of Rs 250, approved by the Maharashtra Cabinet. Initially proposed at Rs 500, the toll was revised by the Urban Development Department to Rs 250, considering various factors. The proposed toll, applicable from 2024 to 2053, will undergo adjustments based on traffic flow and financial patterns in the initial five years. The Cabinet notes a 6 percent annual increase in toll rates, with varying charges for different vehicle types.
