Prime Minister Narendra Modi intensified his criticism of the Congress party citing what he described as its “dangerous intentions,” armed with opposition figure Sam Pitroda’s comments on a US inheritance tax. Pitroda’s remarks added fuel to a raging debate over wealth distribution in India’s politically charged election season. Pitroda could be heard in a video discussing a US law that mandates leaving half of one’s wealth for the public upon death, prompting intense scrutiny from the BJP and leading the Congress to distance itself from his comments. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh attempted to quell the controversy, stating in a social media post that Pitroda “expresses his opinion freely,” which may not always reflect the party’s position.
PM Modi persisted in exerting political pressure on the Congress, using Pitroda’s remarks to launch a fresh offensive. At an election rally in Chhattisgarh, he accused the Congress of planning an inheritance tax, suggesting that it would impose higher tax rates during individuals’ lifetimes and subsequently impose an inheritance tax. PM Modi insinuated a reference to the Nehru-Gandhi family, stating that those who have considered the Congress as their ancestral property and passed it on to their children do not want Indians to pass their property to their own children. He emphasized that the hard-earned property of individuals would not go to their children but to the Congress.
Pitroda’s comments added a new chapter to the ongoing wealth distribution debate. Previously, PM Modi asserted that the Congress aims to redistribute public wealth among Muslims, while the BJP questioned the promise of a “nation-wide socio-economic and caste census” in the Congress manifesto. Although the opposition party claimed that its manifesto did not mention any wealth redistribution survey, the BJP pointed to a video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s speech at the manifesto launch event on April 6, where he made a similar statement.

Regarding Pitroda’s controversial statement, Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, Pitroda, talked in detail about an inheritance tax, suggesting that leaving half of one’s wealth for the public upon death sounded fair to him. He highlighted the need for debates on redistributing wealth through new policies and programs that benefit the people rather than just the super-rich.
Reacting to Pitroda’s suggestion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that Pitroda’s remark exposed the Congress party’s intention to survey private property, place it in government possession, and distribute it according to decisions made during the UPA’s regime. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned whether such policies could ensure justice for citizens, particularly given the vast wealth disparities between businessmen and farmers.
BJP leader Amit Malviya criticized the Congress’s alleged “destructive” plans, highlighting Pitroda’s advocacy for a 50% inheritance tax. He argued that such a policy would mean losing half of individuals’ hard-earned wealth, in addition to increased taxes under a Congress government. BJP spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill warned voters against the Congress, portraying them as “property snatchers.”
In response to the BJP’s criticisms, senior Congress leader Pawan Khera questioned whether Pitroda had stated that the Congress would implement such a policy or if it was included in the party’s manifesto. He defended Pitroda’s right to express personal views, which may not necessarily align with the Congress’s position. Jairam Ramesh supported Pitroda, stating that individual views do not always reflect the party’s stance and accusing the BJP of sensationalizing his comments to divert attention from PM Modi’s election campaign.
As the controversy surrounding Pitroda’s statement grew, he issued a clarification, expressing disappointment that his comments on the US inheritance tax had been twisted by the media to divert attention from PM Modi’s allegations about the Congress manifesto. He dismissed PM Modi’s claims about the Congress manifesto, labeling them as baseless.
