On the day of India’s Aditya-L1 mission launch into space, the Chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), S Somnath, received the shocking news of being diagnosed with cancer. In an interview with Tarmak Media House, he revealed that a growth had been noticed during one of his scans, coinciding with the Aditya-L1 mission launch. Although he experienced health issues during the Chandrayaan-3 mission launch, the clarity about his condition only emerged on that day.
The unexpected diagnosis not only surprised Somnath but also deeply affected his family and colleagues, who stood by him during this challenging period. On September 2, 2023, as India’s Aditya L1 began its journey as the country’s first space-based solar observatory, a routine scan revealed a growth in Somnath’s stomach. Further scans in Chennai confirmed a hereditary disease, presenting a significant health challenge alongside his professional responsibilities.

Facing this adversity, S Somnath underwent an operation followed by chemotherapy. Speaking to Tarmak Media House, he shared, “It was a shock for the family, but now I perceive cancer and its treatment as a solution.” His pragmatic approach reflects incredible strength and an unwavering spirit. While acknowledging uncertainties during the treatment process, Somnath emphasized his ongoing battle against cancer.
Despite the initial challenges, Somnath’s recovery has been remarkable. After just four days in the hospital, he resumed his duties at ISRO, working without pain from the fifth day. “I will be undergoing regular checkups and scans, but now I am completely cured and have resumed my duties,” Somnath declared.
