Elon Musk announced his neurotechnology startup founded in 2016 has successfully implanted a brain device in its inaugural human subject, yielding promising initial outcomes. The company aims to establish direct communication pathways between the brain and computers to enhance human capabilities, address neurological ailments such as ALS and Parkinson’s disease and potentially foster a symbiotic relationship between humans and artificial intelligence.
The first recipient of Neuralink’s implant underwent the procedure recently and is currently in a stable recovery phase. Musk shared the news via X (formerly Twitter), expressing optimism about the detection of promising neuron spikes in the initial results. Last year, Neuralink secured approval from US regulatory bodies to commence human trials for its brain implants.

Neuralink’s primary technology revolves around the “Link” a device approximately the size of five stacked coins which is surgically inserted into the human brain. According to Pitchbook a data company Neuralink, headquartered in California, boasted a workforce of over 400 employees and amassed funding of at least $363 million in the preceding year.

While Elon Musk garners much attention for his endeavors, he is not the sole pioneer in the realm of brain-machine or brain-computer interface research. Despite facing setbacks, Musk reportedly explored potential collaborations with implant developer Synchron signaling his ongoing efforts to advance in the field.
In contrast to Neuralink’s approach, Synchron, headquartered in Australia, introduced its implant version without the need for invasive skull incisions. The company successfully implanted its inaugural device in a US patient in July 2022, marking a significant milestone in the field of neurotechnology.
