The event ‘Charkha to Chips‘ showcased Gujarat’s transition from the historic Sabarmati Ashram to the booming industrial centers of Dholera and Sanand in less than a year. SemiconIndia 2023, organized by the India Semiconductor Mission and industry stakeholders, introduced the slogan ‘Charkha to Chips’, symbolizing India’s journey from Gandhi’s meditative spinning wheel to modern industrialization.
The inaugural SemiconIndia event not only revealed this slogan but also presented a display illustrating India’s technological evolution with a model featuring a charkha and chip. This transition gained significance with Micron’s decision to establish an ATMP plant in Sanand, marking a crucial moment for the country. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside government officials and industry leaders, laid the foundation stone for three semiconductor projects, two of which are located in Dholera and Sanand.
These strategic choices highlight factors such as strong government support, skilled labor availability, land availability, supportive industrial infrastructure, and advantageous geographical locations. Dholera’s proximity to a port and an upcoming international airport enhances its appeal for semiconductor investments, while Sanand’s connectivity to major transportation networks like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport further boosts its attractiveness.

However, the journey towards self-reliance, or ‘Atmanirbhar‘, stems from a deeper narrative rooted in India’s history, particularly the Swadeshi movement led by Mahatma Gandhi. The charkha, symbolizing self-sufficiency during India’s independence struggle, finds its significance in Ahmedabad’s textile industry and landmarks such as the Sabarmati Ashram.

Today, the ashram serves as a reminder of Gandhi’s principles of simplicity, self-reliance, and peaceful resistance. Spinning demonstrations, reminiscent of traditional techniques, can be witnessed by visitors at this sanctuary of peace, situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River.
In essence, the transition from charkha to chips represents Gujarat’s blend of tradition and modernity, heritage, and innovation. This convergence highlights India’s pursuit of self-sufficiency on the global stage, as Gujarat emerges as a center for both traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge technology.
