Congress leader Supriya Shrinate faced backlash after a video of her referring to Maoists as “martyrs” went viral. The BJP criticized her remarks regarding the Kanker encounter, where 29 Naxals were killed by armed forces.
The Chhattisgarh BJP unit posted, “Supriya Shrinate, the national spokesperson of Congress, has insulted the people of Chhattisgarh, the police force and democracy by calling the Naxalites martyrs. Your presence is not welcome on this sacred land.”

Shrinate’s comments stirred controversy as she expressed sympathy for the slain Naxals and called for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Reacting to Shrinate’s statement, BJP leader Shehzad Poonawala said it was “expected of the Congress, but unthinkable.” He criticized the Congress for questioning the bravery of security personnel instead of acknowledging their achievement in eliminating 29 Naxals.
In one of Chhattisgarh’s largest security operations, 29 Naxals were killed in the Kanker area. Among them were more than a dozen women wielding deadly weapons, attempting to protect the men during the encounter.
Three security personnel, including two Border Security Force jawans and one member of the state police’s District Reserve Guard (DRG), sustained injuries during the operation.
